Once again it is upon me, soccer season. When I say “soccer season” I simply mean the John Glenn High School girls soccer season. The time where I fill up memory cards like crazy, disappear into my computer room for days and up load photos until my DSL melts. But this is not about me; it is to the girls that I have photographed over the years, but first a bit of history…
I believe it was in 2005 when I started shooting the Bay City John Glenn High School girls soccer games because my good friend and co worker Fran MacMillan became their head coach that year and I thought it would be fun and a new challenge. So with that in mind and using my one and only camera I shot that first season with film. That only lasted one year. By the next season, Canon had come out with a digital full frame digital DSLR camera, the 5D that I could afford. So off to the races I went, ok soccer games, and ready to shoot the games in digital! Because of this change I knew I would be able to get the photos edited and posted on the web just a few days! Yes, I could do that! At least that was what I convinced myself I would be able to do. Sorry to break this to you guys, but dreams and thoughts are very much different than the real world.
Anyways, in 2006 I posted 11 games, the awards banquet, some random photos and the graduating seniors' game recognition presentation. By the 2011 season I was able to post 16 games, the awards banquet, even more random shots, the senior game recognition, a pre-season work out night and the field of dreams photos!
Since 2006 I have added more and more equipment to help capture and show case these wonderful players. I now have a 5D II camera which is my main shooting camera. I still use the old 5D for my wide angle and fish eye shots. I also mount the 5D on the "boom" for my shots in which I appear to be looking from overhead and straight down on the game huddles. With the end of their conference in 2011, John Glenn will be playing many more games I should be able to shoot. Oh Lord, give my shooting finger the strength and my wonderful wife patience and fortitude! This year I'm going to try some time lapse videos using my IPhone. (Yup there is an app for that!) Two videos have already posted for this season’s take on the Field Of Dreams.
I have shot games in the cold, the wind and rain. There have been some games where it was only a few parents and I who came out to watch the action because of the weather. I have continued to go because of a commitment I made to myself long ago, and because I know the games will be played at their best and hardest, Fran wouldn't let them be played another way.
I ask Fran what has become of the girls who have graduated. Some have become mothers; some were scouted and have gone on play at college. Others have gone on to college and have retired their cleats, while others are playing just for the fun of at college. And some, I think, are like me still trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives when they grow up.
So, to all the girls, past, current and future, of the John Glenn High School Soccer Team, I say congratulations on all you have accomplished so far, both as a team player and individually! And thanks for allowing me to photograph a small part of your life's journey.
Though it all, I have enjoyed every minute, even when you give a pink tee shirt to wear at a fund raiser game. It was for breast cancer, so I had no problem wearing it.
I know I have come a long way during these many years...but to where I don't know yet...but I'm been having fun along the way and I hope you have been to!
